A beautiful and unusual early Cartier Duoplan, housed in a tiny yellow-gold rectangular case and fitted with a black leather cord bracelet. The watch has a lovely silvered dial signed CARTIER, with stylised Arabic numerals, a geometric inner track and tiny blued-steel hands. One of its most interesting features is the winding crown positioned on the back of the case, giving these watches their “backwinder” nickname. Inside is a Jaeger-LeCoultre Duoplan movement, an ingenious movement designed on two levels so that it could fit into an exceptionally small case. This miniature construction allowed Cartier to create an elegant watch that feels almost more like a piece of jewellery than a traditional wristwatch. The yellow-gold case is numbered 68684 and is connected to the black leather bracelet through four sculptural gold loops. Stamped with the French eagle head hallmark and on its original gold numbered deployant. A charming and rare example of early Cartier design, combining beautiful proportions with one of the most interesting miniature movements of its era. The dial has been very well refinished at some point during its lifespan.
